An eminent biologist, Bernd Heinrich thoughts are, Butterflies change their shape as the grow. From caterpillar critters to many wonderful butterfly species. 

It seems to me the only thing that changes in this butterfly creating process is the caterpillar has a very short lifespan. It eats its way into a very fat caterpillar and explodes from the chrysalis to many types of beautiful butterflies.

Also, this is one of the many ways our wonderful God creates life on this planet of ours.
